The Tourbus ’Caster

Telecaster travel guitar, the tourbus’caster…

In the 1950s, Leo Fender laid down the blueprint for the modern electric guitar with the Telecaster, a technically simple instrument which was both affordable and did the job! Following the path marked out by the legendary Leo, I wanted to infuse the Tourbus‘Caster with the distinct character of the Telecaster: a punchy, bright sound with a ‘twangy’ bridge pickup, and a neck pickup full of definition.

The Tourbus‘Caster comes with a bolt-on maple neck and maple fingerboard, a walnut body with two Growl Tele-type single-coil pickups, and a vintage-style, three-saddle bridge.

Wood Species

On Leo Fender’s Telecaster, the body is made of alder or ash, the neck is maple, and the fingerboard can be made of maple or rosewood.

For the Tourbus ‘Caster, after experimenting with different wood species for the body, neck, and fingerboard, I propose using ash and walnut for the body. These woods are denser than alder and allow for a perfect tonal balance with a maple neck and either a maple or rosewood fingerboard.

The walnuts I use, which grow in my region, have quite varied visual characteristics. This allows me to use highly figured and darker woods as well as relatively light woods that can adapt to very light shades.

Hardware

The centerpiece of the Telecaster’s sound, the chrome bridge is a Gotoh “in-tune” version with profiled brass saddles to ensure optimal intonation.

The chrome tuners are also Gotoh model SG360, chosen for their reliability and smooth operation.

The neck/body attachment plate is made of stainless steel, as are the linkages involved in the opening and closing mechanism of the guitar.

Electronics

The pickups on the Telecaster, along with the bridge, greatly contribute to the characteristic sound of this iconic model.

The Tourbus ‘Caster is equipped with a set of hand-wound Growl Struty Twang pickups, featuring a round-sounding neck pickup and a bridge pickup that delivers twang and cuts through the mix.

A volume control and a 3-position selector switch manage these pickups.

The pickups are standard, allowing any Telecaster pickup set to be installed.
